European tradition is likely to be disappointed. The English are notorious iconoclasts :
What in this Emblem, that mans meanings were,
Who made it first, I neither know nor care;
For, whatsoe're it purpos'd, or thought,
To serve my purpose, now it shall be taught;
George Wither sees some pictures he likes and uses them in a way that's suits him. I like his style.
